VisualApplets, the graphical development environment for image processing applications with FPGAs, celebrates in this year its tenth jubilee and will be enhanced significantly and structured newly with version 3. Our two managing directors comment on the strategic motivation, planned improvements and their importance for our partners, distributors, and customers.

The new version 3 of VisualApplets addresses additional customer groups and is therefore positioned broader than before. It offers new functionality without leading to higher costs for our customers. The reason is that customers only pay for the modules they really want to use, meeting their demands. The modules are focused on different user groups.

VisualApplets addresses besides hardware also software developers and application engineers, who would like to develop applications on their own. By using dataflow models, they create individual applet designs – what they can quickly learn. The integrated high-level simulation supports them effectively at error searching, even for larger designs for example with more than 200 operators. Additionally already today, we offer operator libraries as extensions, e.g. for segmentation and classification along with compression. In fall the product extensions VisualApplets Expert and VisualApplets Embedder will be released, which address directly experienced users respectively camera manufacturers.

Focus on new user groups and camera manufacturers

Expert focusses on customers with FPGA and VHDL knowledge. They can further use their know-how and existing code and apply it to the programming of FPGAs, for example to integrate an existing IP Core. This reduces the time-to-market of their products considerably. Embedder is mainly directed to camera and sensor manufacturers respectively to everybody who develops an own camera and would like to equip it with intelligence. The manufacturer is able to integrate VisualApplets in his camera on his own and to profit from the advantages of real-time FPGA image processing. This can definitely be called revolutionary.

Lay
We assist camera manufacturers intensively with trainings and support. The integration of VisualApplets can therefore be executed in very short time. The short time-to-market has an enormous value nowadays.
Has VisualApplets been integrated into the camera, customer-specific adaptations are implemented fast and very easily. The manufacturer Baumer has realized this concept with the LX camera very well. End users, which means customers of the camera manufacturers, profit from a considerable data reduction at the sensor, e.g. in connection with the economical use of the widely spread Gigabit Ethernet cables. Furthermore, they have the possibility to build their own cameras with image processing at the sensor for special functionalities.

When VisualApplets was launched 10 years ago, the solution was already executable for embedding in cameras. The breakthrough succeeded when it was developed so far that manufacturers were able to accomplish the maintenance of the applications from now on by themselves.

Lay
The launch of VisualApplets started directly with a bang and the solution was awarded in the same year with the international innovation prize VISION Award 2006. The high-level programming language for FPGA image processing developed by us connected the worlds of VHDL codes with software programming. With version 2 the user interface was further enhanced for a better handling, and error detection and correction was improved.

And with version 3 we are making a big step towards new users along with camera manufacturers.
